However, if you're looking for more advice, why not follow these four simple tips:
1. FIND OUT THE WHISKIES THEY LIKE
The most important factor in choosing a malt for someone is knowing what they currently like. This may sound obvious, but if you don't know, ask them, or sneak a look in their drinks cabinet.
Then, of course, the easy and safe option would be to gift wrap a bottle of their favourite single malt or use the Malt Matcher to stretch their horizons.
2. CONSIDER WHISKIES FROM THE SAME DISTILLERY
There’s a strong chance that anyone fond of a 10 year old Talisker™ would be absolutely delighted to receive a bottle of the 18 year old or flattered to be presented with a bottle of the 25 year old.
Simply look at the Our Whiskies section to find the Classic Malt they like and explore the range of whiskies from that distillery.
3. DISCOVER NEW SINGLE MALT TERRITORY
Using the Flavour Map, identify whiskies with similar flavours and aromas to their favourite malt.
Check the position of their preferred malt on the Map and then look at those which it indicates as having similar taste characteristics. You could of course surprise them with something quite different from a different area of the Map, but the success of this course of action will depend on how much the future recipient likes surprises…
If you're really not sure what someone likes, the safest bet is to go for something from the centre of the Map. These are well-balanced whiskies with body and flavour, but only a hint of smoke, so are almost certain to be appreciated by any malt whisky enthusiast.
4. TRY A LIMITED EDITION WHISKY
If budget is no issue, then look to some of the more exclusive, limited edition malts. If you look at the Limited Editions section, you will find an archive of all the Classic Malts rarities. Many of these may be hard to track down, but the more recently bottled ones should be easier to find. You can select a bottle that was distilled in their birth year perhaps, or on some other significant date.
