In 1825, farmers John and George Rate built and operated the distillery under the name Milton Distillery until it was licenced and renamed in 1837. Though it was transformed into a sawmill in 1853, the distillery eventually returned to its ‘natural state’ – and much-improved – state, becoming the redbrick Victorian masterpiece we know today.
