Bottlings of Glen Spey whisky are now becoming more widely available, bringing its estery, smoke-tinged lightness to the discerning malt hunter.

The Glen Spey distillery

The Glen Spey distillery

Glen Spey was originally named Millhaugh, because it started out as an extension to the Mill of Rothes. The owner, James Stuart was a corn merchant before he was a distiller, and at one point, the building served a dual purpose. Sold to W & A Gilbey in 1887, Glen Spey suffered a period of bad luck, when its roof collapsed after a particularly heavy snowfall. But production continued despite the mishaps, and Glen Spey was rebuilt and expanded to four stills in 1969. Through it all, the song of the Goldcrest, Britain’s smallest songbird, has accompanied the changes, drifting from the surrounding pine forests.

Fresh and green

Rothes, on the banks of the river Spey, benefits from the Gulf Stream affect - experiencing damp winters and cloudy summers. The 1200 or so locals might not appreciate the lack of sunshine, but they have four distilleries on their doorstep – no doubt founded there for the region’s fertile land and abundant fresh water. So things aren’t all bad.
