Blair Athol Distillery stands at the gateway to the Scottish Highlands in the picturesque town of Pitlochry, Perthshire. It’s here that we create our mellow, deep-toned Single Malt that makes us famous. Now we invite you to come and experience this Distillery Only bottle for a chance to sip something truly unique.
So what makes our Distillery Only expression so special? Our Brand Home Manager Jill Scougall who has worked at the Blair Athol Distillery for over 30 years explains…
Specially selected casks have been used to mature the Blair Athol spirit gently in conditioned European and refill American oak casks.
First impressions remind you of the 12 Year Old Flora & Fauna edition but that is short lived as you realise this limited edition is much more complex. The European Oak brings a richness to the liquid which over the years we have come to associate with Blair Athol but this expression has a secret, as well as the European oak we have chosen casks of refill American Oak which brings a fresh vibrancy to the whisky.
Whether you prefer to enjoy your whisky neat or with water, both options present an opportunity to unlock the unique characteristics inside each dram.
Sipping Blair Athol neat reveals aromas of creamy milk and dark chocolate. These then give way to a background of rich raisins and sweet sultanas. With time this Single Malt Whisky becomes more vibrant boasting notes of mandarin oranges, herbal notes with just a hint of grass, liquorice and a touch of spice.
Adding a drop of spring water allows the Blair Athol Distillery character to come to the fore with aromas of cereal, briny and cake mix making themselves known. The citrus notes become more apparent while the chocolate aromas start to take a back seat but subtly assert themselves.
As for flavours, sipping Blair Athol neat presents smooth and creamy flavours on the palate intermingled with dark berry fruits. The finish is medium with an aromatic spicy, slightly oaky aftertaste.
With water, the fruit flavours develop into bolder tastes of citrus with oranges, peaches and nectarines emerging. The finish is much longer and drying with an aftertaste that is nutty and spicy with just a hint of brown sugar.
This Distillery Only bottle pairs exceptionally well with savoury nibbles such as cheese and biscuits. A light fruit infused with the cheese will compliment the richness of the European Oak while not overpowering the lighter smooth vanilla flavours of the American Oak.
After sampling our whisky at the Distillery, I’d also like to share my suggestions of local secrets….
A trip to Blair Castle in the town of Blair Atholl is well worth a visit along with the Dam and Fish Ladder with a new Visitor Centre and Pitlochry Festival Theatre which is only next door. At certain times of the year you are able to see the salmon in the viewing chamber at the Fish Ladder.
Whether you’re new to the world of whisky or Single Malt connoisseur, our distillery tours offer a selection of ways to explore how we make our whisky and even give you the opportunity to taste directly from the cask.
Treat a loved one to a tour and bottle of our Distillery Only bottle or even take some home as the ultimate gift.
