Oban Distillery are proud to present their Distillery Only expression. With just 6000 bottles produced and exclusively available from the distillery itself, we promise it’s worth the journey.
Nestling beneath the steep cliff that overlooks Oban, one of Scotland's oldest sources of Single Malt Scotch whisky is but a stone's throw from the sea. A warm welcome awaits with guided distillery tours running regularly through out the year, an excellent exhibition and well stocked tasting bar and whisky gift shop and a chance to sample our limited release Distillery Only bottle.
Here to introduce our limited release bottle is Senior Site Manager, Sarah Burgess. Prior to joining the Oban family, Sarah explored the world of whisky at other renowned distilleries such as Glenkinchi, Clynelish, Auchroisk, Glenspey, Cardhu and more. She shares what makes this Distillery Only bottle so special...
I get a strong candied orangemarmalade flavour that changes to a more savoury salt and pepper taste. The salt and pepper flavour is the characteristic that I love about the Oban 14 so I’m delighted to pick up this characteristic with a bit of an edge.
As for what makes this expression special…
It’s a unique limited edition expression from Oban Distillery. This Single Malt has been triple matured where each maturation cycle has helped shaped this spirit’s character. During the first maturation the spirit has been matured in casks similar to those used for the revered Oban 14 Year Old, a combination of refill European and refill American oak . The spirit has then been blended and transferred into American oak casks that have been specially charred in order to enhance the original spirit with woody flavours. The latter has then been blended again and transferred into what we term as European oak marrying casks which allows the flavours to gently mingle over time.
The beauty of Oban Distillery Only can be enjoyed before it even hits your lips. Neat, the aromas of this rare Oban Distillery Only bottle boast a rich nose of ripe red berry fruits which gradually dissipates leaving a burnt candied orange peel aroma with hints of sweet vanilla spice.
The addition of water unleashes fresher citrus as fruit notes come to the fore with just a hint of stewed raisins. The spice becomes a bit more intense with more of a floral background than vanilla sweet.
On its own, the taste of slight pepper on the tip of the tongue is short-lived leaving you with a creamy mouthfeel with a mixture of fruit and spice and just a hint of dark chocolate. It has a slightly dry medium finish with a rich dark fruit aftertaste.
Dilution with water enhances the spice and dark chocolate unearthing a new layer of flavour. The finish is medium to short but warming with a citrus and orchard fruit aftertaste.
This exceptional Oban can be enjoyed however you prefer but pairs fantastically with dark chocolate.
Should you travel to the Oban Distillery to sample our Distillery Only bottle, I would recommend the exclusive tour which has the tasting session in my office, it’s a great view over the bay and the whiskies are great too! After a distillery tour, I love walking up to the Tower, the views are excellent and the story is great too. I also love going to the seafood shack for langoustines! Well worth a visit.
Now we invite you to come and not only tour our distillery, but sample this unique Oban expression only available at the Visitor Centre. A treat for whisky novices and connoisseurs alike, it’s a memory that can continue to sample and savour even from home with your own Distillery Only Bottle.
