Irish coffee is a classic drink that combines hot coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar, and a layer of lightly whipped cream. It was first created by chef Joe Sheridan in the 1940s and has since become a well-known serve in cafés and bars around the world, valued for its simple ingredients and balanced coffee and whiskey flavours.

  • Irish whiskey
    50ml
  • Freshly brewed coffee
    150ml
  • Teaspoon of demerera sugar
    1
  • Double cream or squirty cream
  • Nutmeg

Bartender tip: If you have the time, using freshly-whipped double cream really makes the difference. It's soft, pillowy, and so indulgent.

Method
STEP 01
Whip
If using double cream, whip two tablespoons until slightly thickened. If using squirty cream, skip this step
STEP 02
Pour
Add the whiskey into a mug or heatproof glass, then add the coffee and sugar, and stir
STEP 03
Garnish
If using double cream, scoop the cream and place it on top of the drink. If using squirty cream, squirt directly onto the drink. Garnish with a sprinkle of grated nutmeg
