Port Ellen Distillery was at risk of being lost to history despite its legendary status amongst whisky drinkers. For years after its closure in 1983, Port Ellen lay dormant and became one of the most famous examples of Scotland’s "ghost distilleries”.
However, after a massive restoration project it’s been back in operation since 2024 and has reclaimed its place among the most admired single malts.
Its flavor profile is celebrated for its mellow nose with wood ash and hints of rock salt, as well as its long peppery, smoky finish with a spicy edge.
Port Ellen Distillery Production
Thanks to a series of renovation projects, Port Ellen seamlessly blends traditional techniques with modern innovation to create its beloved whiskies.
At its heart lie The Phoenix Stills, exact replicas of the copper originals. A second pair, known as The Experimental Stills, have been specially designed to push the boundaries of distillation.
Port Ellen recycles both heat and water, which alongside the renewable-biofuel boiler make it a carbon neutral distillery.

A visit to the Port Ellen Distillery provides a look at the cutting edge of whisky production. Small group tours guided by experts celebrate its dedication to both modern and traditional techniques. Guided tastings meanwhile showcase rare, exceptional expressions.
Port Ellen FAQs
Port Ellen closed its doors in May 1983 after a slump in demand meant it was surplus to requirement. After closing, Port Ellen became almost mythical in stature, and the bottles produced prior to its closure are some of the most sought after in the world. Finally, after 40 years of closure, it reopened in 2024.
The Port Ellen Distillery was originally founded by Alexander Kerr Mackay in 1825, making it more than 200 years old.
The best way to get to Port Ellen is by ferry. The island is accessible from Kennacraig on the West Coast of Scotland. Port Ellen is very close to the harbour, making one of the first Scotch destinations you’ll encounter on Islay.
You can also fly into Islay Airport, which is a short drive from Port Ellen.
The area surrounding Port Ellen is ideal for hiking and cycling. There’s also the historic Carraig Fhada Lighthouse, Singing Sands Beach and boat tours. Near Port Ellen lie the ruins of Dunyvaig castle, which was once a naval base for the Lord of the Isles and commands sweeping views across the Atlantic.
Port Ellen Distillery operates tours by appointment only, so it’s strongly advised to book in advance. Also please note that anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
