The New York Sour is a variation of the classic Whiskey Sour, known for its distinctive red wine float layered on top of the drink. While the exact origin is debated, the style became associated with bartenders in New York City during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Combining whiskey, fresh lemon juice, sugar syrup, and a carefully poured wine layer, it’s a visuallyc striking twist on a well-known sour.

  • Bourbon
    50ml
  • Fresh lemon juice
    25ml
  • Sugar syrup
    1 part sugar dissolved over heat into 1 part water
    15ml
  • Red wine
    25ml
  • Egg white
    1
  • Lemon peel
    1
  • Ice

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Bar spoon

Bartender tip: If you're short on time, you can just do one shake of the ingredients. But shaking twice helps to create a thick foam which sits beautifully on top of the drink.

STEP 01
Pour
Add the bourbon, juice, sugar syrup and egg white into a cocktail shaker
STEP 02
Shake
Shake to froth up the mixture, then open the shaker and add ice. Shake again until the surface feels chilled
STEP 03
Strain
Strain the mixture into a rocks glass filled with ice
STEP 04
Float
Pour the red wine over the back of a spoon so it gently floats on top of the mixture
STEP 05
Garnish
Garnish with a lemon peel

The New York Sour takes a classic whiskey sour and elevates it with a float of red wine. A small but simple twist that adds depth, colour and a whole new flavour.
